A new Australian industry has emerged based on the commercialization of patented spin-offs from gravity wave research. The licensee, Poseidon Scientific Instrument, has captured the world market in state-of-the-art radar oscillators originally developed at UWA for gravity waves. This technology has been sub-licensed to the world's major defence aerospace industries. It uses artificial sapphire as the basis for creating microwave signals of unprecedented purity. The improvement in performance is sufficient to allow radars to detect stealth aircraft - aircraft that were previously undetectable. This technology will also allow commercial aircraft to identify air turbulence faster and more clearly than even before.
